Background: Sanitation-related health issues account for 24% of total global death and 28% of death among under-five children with cholera and diarrhoea as the most occurring sanitation-related disease. The Ghana Health Services adopted the CHPS concept as one of the interventions to solve this problem. However, it continues to be a major issue in the country accounting for 18% of the total death in 2016. Aim: This study seeks to assess the role of the CHPS concept in addressing sanitation-related health issues in Ghana: the case of Ahafo Region. Methods: A descriptive exploratory qualitative study with an in-depth interview guide was used to collect nominal variables from all respondents. The collected data was transcribed verbatim from the audio recordings and inductive thematic analysis was applied to the transcripts and codes were developed from participants' own words with Atlas ti.7. Results: This study identified that, through active and passive surveillance, sanitation issues such as open defecation, poor waste disposal, and poor food and water hygiene were ascertained and addressed with Community Health Management Committee (CHMC) meetings, collaboration with other stakeholders, and health education by CHOs under the CHPS concept. However, challenges such as lack of cooperation from stakeholders, finances and transportation, and workload and accommodations hinder its utilization. Conclusion: In Conclusion, the CHPS concept had helped in addressing sanitation-related issues in the Ahafo region. Therefore, improving on these challenges and improving these opportunities will aid the effectiveness of using the CHPS concept and help halt diseases emanating from sanitation-related issues.
